The Gerberviertel (Tanners’ Quarter) has often been flooded in the past, but currently is in a good state of repair. The traditional industries were tanning and rafting. Trees were cut and bound together in rafts and then the local young men would raft merchandise down to the Rhine and often all the way to Amsterdam. It was a well-paid profession but risky. The Schüttesägemuseum, is housed in a former water-driven sawmill and recalls the industries from the past. The waterwheel is 7.2 m (23.6 feet) in diameter.
